One of every three children in Pakistan is affected by stunted growth. It is the result of continued low intake of energy and essential nutrients. Stunted children suffer delayed physical and psychological growth as both their bodies and brains do not develop as they normally should. One third (33%) of worlds stunted children live in Pakistan.
To combat the issue of stunted growth among the children, AL-Maida is initiating its ‘School Meal Program’ by adopting schools in Lahore. Free of cost lunch on daily basis will be served at these adopted schools. This program not only improves the health of students, by following a balances nutritional diet but also encourages the parents to get their children enrolled in the schools, hence combating another important issue of illiteracy.
Our pilot project brought us to this conclusion that the school meals program helps children to gain their lost height and weight. It was also noted that enrollment in the adapted school was increased by 100% and percentage of absents dropped significantly.
